English Language Learners exit Transitional Program of Instruction (ESL class) when they obtain certain English language proficiency level. The annually administered state of Illinois approved English Language proficiency test, ACCESS for ELLs, provides the scores in four domains of language acquisition: Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing.
What scores does a student have to obtain to be considered English language proficient?
As of January 1, 2014, students who obtain an overall composite proficiency level of 5.0 as well as a 4.2 Reading and 4.2 Writing proficiency levels on ACCESS for ELLs®, are to be considered English language proficient and exit the ESL class (Transitional Program of Instruction).
